Two full sleeve tattoos by artist Simon Halpern
Getting a tattoo is exciting, but the real work begins once you leave the studio. Proper aftercare is essential—not just for keeping your tattoo looking vibrant, but also for ensuring it heals safely and comfortably. Whether you’re a first-timer or adding to an existing collection, consult this tattoo aftercare guide to heal your next tattoo.
1. The First 24 Hours Matter
Your artist will bandage your tattoo to protect it from bacteria and friction. Keep this covering on for the amount of time they recommend—usually a few hours. When you remove it, wash your hands first, then gently clean your tattoo with lukewarm water and an unscented, mild soap. Pat it dry using a clean towel; avoid rubbing your new tattoo while drying.
2. Moisturize
Once the tattoo is dry, apply a thin layer of a recommended ointment or fragrance-free moisturizer. More is not better—too much product can clog pores and prolong healing. Apply small amounts 2–3 times a day, just enough to keep the tattoo slightly hydrated without looking shiny or wet.
3. Expect Some Itching and Peeling
As your tattoo heals, it may itch or peel like a mild sunburn. This is completely normal. Do not scratch or pick at the flakes—doing so can pull out ink and cause patchy healing. If itching becomes annoying, a light tap can help reduce the sensation without damaging the skin.
4. Keep It Clean—and Out of the Sun
For at least two weeks, avoid soaking your tattoo in water. This means no swimming pools, baths, or hot tubs. Quick showers are fine. Sun exposure is one of the biggest threats to fresh ink, so keep it covered or apply sunscreen (after it’s fully healed). UV rays can cause fading faster than anything else.
5. Be Patient With the Healing Process
Most tattoos take 2–4 weeks to surface-heal, though deeper layers continue healing for months. If you notice signs of infection—such as excessive redness, pus, or swelling—contact your artist and your medical professional.
A little care goes a long way. Follow this tattoo aftercare guide, trust your artist’s guidance, and you’ll help your tattoo heal beautifully for years to come. And always, don’t hesitate to come see us at 1 Point Tattoo in beautiful Kailua, Oahu.
